Throughout my time at Mason, I have had the opportunity to serve in a number of different roles:
Mason Ambassador (2014-2015)
The first leadership position I held on campus was being a Mason Ambassador. Mason Ambassadors give tours to high school students who are considering going to George Mason. As a Mason Ambassador, I was able to learn more about the resources we have on campus and the benefits of every resource. I led tours that ranged anywhere between 3 – 50 people. I also got to encourage others to love George Mason that I do. Ambassadors serve as a liaison between potential Patriots and current students or faculty and staff. They are usually the first students people considering coming to Mason meet, so that tour really shapes a person’s impression of the school as a whole.
Chase Dreams Not Boys – Outreach Chairperson (2015 – Present)
Chase Dreams Not Boys is a non-profit organization that empowers and uplifts minority women and strives to build relationships between women on-campus. We hold events frequently throughout the year that range between sexual health and career readiness. As the outreach chairperson I coordinated and planned the Outreach Program that we hold every year. I have to locate different schools or community centers to hold the Outreach Program and working guidance counselors, principals, or site coordinators to get the program started. The outreach program is aimed at girls who are between the ages of 12-17. Students at George Mason serve as mentors to the girls and have discussions about topics such as tips on how to get to college, healthy relationships, and living a healthy lifestyle.
Student Government – Student Senator (2015-2016)
George Mason University student senators serve as liaisons between the student body and the university administration. We pass bills and resolutions that represent the wants and needs of the students and lobby for things we feel are necessities for the university.
LEAD Office – Leadership Consultant (2015-Present)
The Leadership Education and Development office stands to teach others about leadership and believes everyone has the potential to be a leader. As a Leadership Consultant in the office, I have had the opportunity to plan and facilitate a number of different programs. Every week we hold L-Team meetings which helps students learn more about their personal leadership styles and how to put their leaderships skills to use. We also help plan the Mason Fear to Freedom program which raises awareness about sexual abuse and domestic violence. We facilitate workshops dealing with communication skills and team building with different offices and organizations on campus such as Mason Recreation, University 100 classes, and fraternity and sorority groups. I also worked with my fellow leadership consultants to co-teach an 8-week course called Emerging Leaders which discussed different topics such as ethics and leaderships, goals, and values.
Applied Developmental Psychology – Project Manager (Spring 2017)
I have had the opportunity to serve as one of the project managers for a research coming out of the Applied Developmental Psychology lab at George Mason University. The study focused on decision making in math with kids. As a manager, I kept track of the attendance of the research assistants and prepared them for the tasks they would be performing with the children. I also served as a liaison between the research assistants and the person running the project. In this role, I was able to gain hands-on supervisory experience.
